From: Commanders’ Weather Corp 154 Broad St, Suite 1517 Nashua, NH 03062 Tel: 603-882-6789, Fax: 603-882-6661 ********************************************************************** Route: Fort Lauderdale to Newport Departure: Sunday AM June 6, 1999 Forecast prepared: 1030 EDT Saturday, June 5, 1999 Summary … Looks a little rough heading out tomorrow and Monday but gets better north of 30. Recommend calling tomorrow before departure tomorrow to check on latest conditions. 1) Map today shows large high pressure over New England this morning with a weakening frontal system off the Carolina coast approaching 30 north. a) This front will weaken and dissipate next 24-36 hours. 2) There is also a weak tropical type low near the Dominican Republic which will tend to drift slowly toward southern Florida by early next week. 3) Expect the wind gradient to increase to 17-25 kts from 25-30 north over the next 24 hours east of Florida as this weak low drifts slowly WNW. 4) For departure early tomorrow expect it to be fairly rough for you and recommend heading northward along the coast for a few reasons. a) This will give you a better angle on the wind which should be 060-090. b) Winds near shore may be closer to 090 in the afternoon and evening with 070-080 offshore. c) Seas will be quite rough from the Gulf Stream eastward with seas possibly over 8 feet especially on the Stream. So do not want you on the Stream. 5) You will keep the good E wind into midday Monday then as you get north of 30 it will diminish as you get close to the high pressure ridge. 6) In fact winds may be light enough that you have to motor for a time Tuesday pm into Wednesday. 7) Then expect winds to clock to SE-S then SSW as you approach the coast of NC Wednesday. 8) Now some uncertainty what happens second half of the week. a) There will be another front that settles down from New England and by Wednesday the maps show this front down to about extreme southern NJ and becoming stationary then dissipating Friday. You would keep a light to moderate S-SW breeze around Hatteras and northward possibly all the way to Newport if this solution is correct. b) Another model brings this front south of Hatteras Thursday and if this occurs you would be headed by NE wind around Hatteras with possibly some rough conditions. c) After looking at it again favor solution 'a' and this would result in more favorable wind for you from Hatteras northward. 9) However being 5 days out things can change and you need to check with us Wednesday for the latest weather conditions as you continue northward. Routing: Recommend staying west of the Stream Sunday and Monday to avoid rougher seas and get a better angle on the ENE wind. Once wind diminishes and seas calm down vicinity 30 north then head toward Cape Hatteras. Recommend getting near the coast near Beaufort and check on latest conditions going around Hatteras.
